US COVID-19 cases could reach 20 million before Biden takes office, model forecast

November 23 – US COVID-19 cases could reach 20 million before President Joe Biden takes office, researchers predict in a study published Monday in Scientific Reports.

According to the new model, current social distance reflects about 60% returning to normal.

At that level, Biden is likely to increase from more than 12.2 million to 20 million by the end of January.

Meng Liu, Raphael Thomadsen, and Song Yao of Olin Business School have developed a COVID-19 predictive model at Washington University in St. Louis. This accurately predicts an increase in COVID-19 cases during the summer.

According to researchers, social distance was the key to controlling the virus.

The newspaper found that if social distances were eliminated, the number of incidents could increase significantly.

In contrast, when social distance returned to levels reached in April, “we were able to effectively crush COVID growth within a few weeks,” Thomasen said.

For the study, researchers used a modified model that examined interconnected social networks and found that COVID-19 cases did not grow exponentially for long periods of time, as the classical model predicted. Thomadsen added.

According to the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Tracker, there are already more than 12.2 million cases in the United States, the most in any country, and the most dead in more than 256,000.

This month alone, the United States reported more than 3 million new infections and reached a record number of hospitalizations.

On Friday, the US Food and Drug Administration granted urgent permission to use monoclonal antibodies to treat COVID-19. Over 195,000 new infections have been reported nationwide, and cases have surged in almost every state.

President Donald Trump received antibody treatment last month after being diagnosed, but is initially expected to run out of medication.

The country recently aggregated another 1 million cases within 6 days for the second straight week, from 11 million on Sunday, November 15th to over 10 million on 9th November.

The United States has also recently set another record for the highest number of COVID-19 cases per day, adding to its maximum number of deaths per day.
