MOLLY MCCANN’s flyweight promotion came to a sudden halt at Madison Square Garden.
Meatballs locked horns with highly rated Erin Branchfield early Sunday morning in stacked qualifiers UFC 281 at MSG in New York.
The Liverpool native entered the game with an octagonal career following a crushing defeat Victory over Luana Carolina and Hannah Goldie.
However, she was stopped by a surge over 125-pound prospect Branchfield. Branchfield won on submission thanks to a nasty Kimura and took her 4 wins on the bounce.
An overjoyed Branchfield said of silencing the professional McCann crowd: [ to shut it down].
“And I think it was worth 50k.”
There was no glove touch to start the long-awaited flyweight showdown.
McCann applied the pressure early on and tried to land a powerful straight right hand.
It didn’t take long for Branchfield to go for a takedown. She scored a takedown thanks to a beautiful level change after perfectly timing a right hand from McCann.
The American moved to side control and started dropping short strikes as he tried to move up the position.
The forward position she took when trapping Liverpool’s arm in an attached cross.
The referee showed no interest in stopping the contest, but crushing blow after crushing blow started raining down from Branch Field.
McCann tried his best to chase off the top-heavy Branch field, with little success.
Branchfield quickly chose to change tack and found an opening for Atte Kimura.
McCann bravely, and perhaps even risked, refused to tap the laborious post.
But when Branchfield stepped forward and put even more pressure on her arm, she was forced.
The 23-year-old Branchfield said of the finish: [the referee] I didn’t stop it. I was throwing a lot of punches.
“She was still moving, but not quite there. But I think it could have been stopped sooner.”
