Ankara, Turkey (AP) —Fire brigades blacken pine forests near popular resorts in southwestern Turkey and fight on Thursday’s wind-blown wildfires that have driven dozens of people out of their homes.
More than 2,500 firefighters were deployed with the help of water-dropping planes and helicopters to fight the flames that erupted on Tuesday in the Borduvet area near Marmaris on the Aegean coast. The flame spread rapidly and was fanned by the wind.
Authorities have evacuated more than 150 people from the area as a precautionary measure, Turkey’s forestry minister, Vahit Kirisci, told reporters late Wednesday.
A year after Turkey’s worst wildfire, two fires in the Borduvet region were burning.
“It’s not out of control, but I can’t say it’s under control yet,” he said.
A total of 27 water-drop helicopters, 14 planes, and 2,600 personnel were involved in efforts to tame the flames, according to the minister.
