Tourism experts say it may take three to five years for New York to recover – CBS New York

New York (CBSNewYork) — Big Apple has tourism issues.

Hazel Sanchez of CBS2 said on Tuesday, a surprising new report shows that it can take up to five years for a large number of regular visitors to return to New York City.

The city that never sleeps is taking a nap.

“When I was here in February, it was very crowded. It’s like there’s no one here right now,” said Saboya Henderson, a tourist from Georgia.

“It’s not the same, I don’t think it will be the same,” added the Brooklyn Canarsie chivalry romance.

Coronavirus pandemic

Initially, 2020 was the 11th consecutive year of record growth for New York City’s tourism industry. However, March brought the coronavirus.

“It was absolutely immediate, which meant that when the pandemic broke out, the lights seemed to go out,” said Chris Heywood, executive vice president of NYC & Company, a destination marketing organization in five provinces.

In 2019, the city’s travel and tourism industry reached a record 66 million visitors, generated $ 70 billion in revenue and supported approximately 400,000 jobs.

The end-of-year forecast for 2020 is just 22.9 million visitors, a 66% decrease.

Store manager Awad Moses said he was losing money at Val Cafe in Times Square.

“Usually I have people sitting inside, sitting outside, inside, sometimes in line, and three people working at a time, but now there’s nothing,” Moses said. When asked if he thought the business would survive, he added, “We are working hard.”

“The economy is really depressed because not everyone is on tour,” added Wilson Gupio of Newark.

“I think the availability of vaccines in early summer next spring will be an inflection point. After that, the ship will turn around and begin to see the recovery materialize,” Haywood speculated.

Given potential health breakthroughs, lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, and growing consumer confidence in travel, Heywood estimates that pre-pandemic tourism rates could return within three years. I will.

However, he said the number of international travelers staying longer and spending more than domestic tourists is not expected to return to 2019 levels by 2025.

To speed up the timeline, NYC & Company promotes special events such as holiday programming, staycation and support for local businesses.

“We … and God … hope things get better, hopefully do you know? We’ve experienced a lot, but we’re about to come.” Moses said.

NYC & Company has encouraged people to use less crowded cities. Hotel occupancy is increasing over the weekend, which is certainly promising news.
