Boston-Giancarlo Stanton has a “good chance” to play as an outfielder at some point in the next series against the Yankees’ Red Sox, Aaron Boone told MLB Network Radio Thursday.
Stanton hasn’t appeared in the outfield since 2019 as the Yankees tried to prevent a slugger injury that had been dealing with lower body illnesses for many hours in Bronx.
When the Yankees played two games in Philadelphia in June, he didn’t play in the outfield.
At the time, Stanton and Boon pointed out that the Yankees would play in Miami next week, but the team is dealing with an injury and a serious lack of depth in the outfield due to COVID-19, Stanton as well as DH. Schedules to use can grow exponentially.
Stanton finally played as an outfielder in Game 1 of the 2019 ALCS, after which he sat up to Game 5 in the tense right quad of the series, where the Yankees lost to the Astros in six games.
If Stanton could play in the outfield, the Yankees would be able to use Gary Sanchez as a DH.
Stanton had a RBI single Phillies wins at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. The Yankees have defeated Fenway Park for four consecutive games, starting a four-game series with the Red Sox on Thursday and playing three games in Tampa Bay starting Monday. Stretching is a great help in deciding whether the Yankees will be a factor in AL East racing.
