New York (CBSNewYork) — Local leaders New York City Department of Education To find a way to tackle trauma at school on Thursday.

“Let’s get rid of all the school customs that hurt us,” said Keneisha Buckley, a 16-year-old student. Queens, On behalf of her companion, was chosen to speak at a rally outside the Town Hall.
“Why do students like me have to go to see police officers in the school building … what they see first …?” Kenesia expressed concern. “Why are students late for class? They have to go through a metal detector.”

“The school wasn’t equipped to serve children in distress,” said Rasheedag Brown Harris, a healing-focused school advocate.

“I was very shocked about what was happening throughout the year. I was talking a lot about it with my friends,” said student Mayley McClanahan.
The group calls on DOEs to consider approaches to healing-centric punishment. For example, they are proposing treatments instead of detention and more social workers instead of more metal detectors.
“Let’s say your child is involved in a fight and is usually suspended,” said group Tom Shepherd. “The way this is currently working is for the school to actually meet the student, meet their parents, and understand what is happening to this child.”
The group has sent a list of recommendations to DOE.
CBS2 asked DOE if they plan to adopt one of the suggestions, but is still waiting for a response.
