Studies have found that flavanol-rich cocoa drinks can improve brain function

November 24th – New studies show that flavanol-rich cocoa drinks can improve oxygenation and cognitive abilities in the brains of healthy adults.

Researchers tested the effects of cocoa flavanol intake in two trial studies published in Scientific Reports on Tuesday.

Subjects were given flavanol-rich cocoa in one study and consumed processed cocoa containing very low levels of flavanols in another study. Neither the researchers nor the participants knew what type of cocoa was consumed in the double-blind study to prevent expectations from affecting the results.

Researchers have found that high flavanol cocoa intake results in faster and larger brain oxygenation in 14 of 18 adult men aged 18-45 years, improving performance in complex tests. I did.

“Flavanols are small molecules found in many fruits, vegetables, and cocoa,” Catalina Lendiro, one of the principal investigators of the study, said in a press release.

“It is known to give fruits and vegetables a bright color and help with vascular function. Whether flavanols also help the cerebrovascular system and whether it can have a positive effect on cognitive function. I wanted to know, “says biologist Lendiro. University of Birmingham, UK.

Lendiro added that the four adults who did not show improvement with flavanol intake “already showed the best oxygenation response at baseline.”

“This may indicate that there is little room for improvement in people who are already fairly healthy,” Rendiro said. “Overall, the findings suggest that improved vascular activity after exposure to flavanols is associated with improved cognitive function.”

Lendiro led the study with Monica Fabiana and Gabriel Gratton, professors of psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

According to Fabiana, the team measured frontal lobe oxygenation. It’s the key to planning, coordination, and decision-making, and it’s a technique that uses light to capture changes in blood flow to the brain.

The limits of the study, which included 18 healthy male volunteers, included a small number of participants and the exclusion of women, the researchers said.

“Women were excluded from the study to ensure a more homogeneous sample and to minimize the effect of hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle on vascular outcomes,” the researchers said in the study.
