Former President Donald Trump threw cold water on Monday, believing that if the Republicans exercised control of the Speaker of the House in the 2022 midterm elections, he would be interested in becoming the next Speaker of the House.
Mr. Trump said he knew chatter, but had a good relationship with California Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who was in a good position to win a speaker gavel if the GOP ruled the House of Representatives. Said there is.
“I saw a story about it, but it’s nothing I’ve ever thought of,” Mr. Trump said during an American Voice News appearance.
Mr. Trump could be elected as a speaker without a seat in the House of Representatives, as neither the Constitution nor the rules of the House of Representatives formally require the speaker to be a member of the House of Representatives.
Mr. Trump sounded more open to the idea in an interview earlier this month after his former adviser Stephen Bannon came up with the idea.
“It’s very interesting,” Trump told conservative radio host Wayne Allin Root.
In the same interview, Mr. Trump said others are more likely to run for the US Senate.
“But what you know, your thoughts may be better,” Trump said. “It is very interesting.”
The comment turned to McCarthy, who has maintained a close relationship with Mr. Trump since the election and the January 6th attack on the US Capitol.
McCarthy accidentally helped bring the story to light over the weekend when asked if he would support Trump becoming Speaker of the House.
“I talk to President Trump many times, he tells me he wants to be a speaker, and I think he should be president,” McCarthy said on the Fox News channel. ..
A McCarthy spokesman later stated that McCarthy intended to tell Trump, “I want to be a speaker.”
