Madrid (AP) — Chef Jose Andre and his world central kitchen won the prestigious Spanish award on Wednesday for their international relief efforts to promote a healthy diet.

The jury, who decides on the Prince of Asturias Award, said that 51-year-old Andre and his nonprofit organization “provided a very quick and efficient on-site response to social and nutritional emergencies.” Awarded the Concord Award.

Andre was born in northern Spain in 1969, moved to the United States in 1991, and later became an American citizen. He also contributed to the spread of Spanish cuisine, especially tapas, in the United States before becoming deeply involved in humanitarian activities.

Andre founded the World Central Kitchen in 2010 after visiting Haiti to carry out aid activities. Since then, we have been actively working on the development of field kitchens to respond to the food crisis in the United States and abroad. The organization provided more than 3.6 million meals in Puerto Rico under the influence of Hurricane Maria in 2017. Last year, Andre dedicated some of his restaurants in the United States to feed those in need during a coronavirus pandemic.

Andre, who received many honors, was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama in 2015.
