A Southwest Airlines flight from Texas to Florida was reportedly destroyed by a man’s cell phone accompanied by a woman, forcing her to make an emergency landing.
Flight 4699 from Dallas to Fort Lauderdale changed destination to Pensacola on Wednesday after a woman’s makeshift weapon landed. Local 10 news reported..
“When she was hitting him on the phone, the phone exploded and ignited,” Parkland passenger Katie Engleson told the station.
“Everyone seemed crazy, suddenly I saw smoke and heard the word’fire’, but next to it was an object that literally smoked,” she said. “It was certainly very, very scary.”
She said a man on the plane smoldered his cell phone with water.
Video footage of the case shows law enforcement officers investigating, but it’s not immediately clear whether the man and woman were charged.
A Southwest Airlines official said the passengers traveling with him got off the plane at Pensacola.
“The Southwest Airlines flight from Dallas Love Field was on Wednesday as a dispute arose between two passengers traveling together, a broken cell phone smoldered, and a flight attendant put it in a battery storage bag. I safely relocated to Pensacola International Airport in the afternoon, “the airline said in a statement.
“After the two passengers got off the plane at Pensacola, the flight headed for Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport. We thank our passengers for their patience, cooperation and support today.”
