Sam Darnold doesn’t give Jets much reason to keep him

If this is actually an attempt by Jets quarterback Sam Darnold to convince the team to stick to him in 2021, it’s not working.

Darnold managed to play another game on Sunday, completing a 132-yard 14-of-26 pass without a touchdown with Jets’ 40-3 defeat in Seattle. He wasn’t pass-cut because the Seahawks dropped the pass three times.

“They were doing a good job of disrupting our flow,” Darnold said. “They were doing a really good job of stopping the run game. When they needed to pass the ball, they couldn’t pass the ball efficiently enough to win the game.”

This is the problem: this is not an old Seahawks defense. The boom corps is just a memory. Seattle was 31st overall on Sunday and 32nd against the pass. They shut down Darnold and the attack. The third year quarterback was unable to throw a touchdown pass in five of the nine starts of the season. Darnold’s day with Jets seems to be counted, with Jets barreling 0-13 towards the first pick and potentially Trevor Lawrence.

“Lost is not fun. We just need to get better,” Darnold said. “We have to find a way to keep improving, get better, and do everything we need to win the game.”

Kicker Sergio Castillo killed Jet on Sunday with three second-quarter mistakes. The game may have been a blunder anyway, but Jets would have been in the game half-time if Castillo hadn’t missed 37, 41, 43 yards after his first kick from 45 yards.

“Mentally, I felt ready to go to each kick,” Castillo said. “Mentally, I’m good. I was calm. Gathered. That was just one example of when I didn’t work. This week [I will] Going back to basics, performance will improve next week. “

See if Castillo gets that chance. Jet planes may be on the market for new kickers.
