There is a new candidate with the worst pitch ever.
Royals rookie Jake Brentz made six appearances in athletics on Tuesday, leading Starling Marte 0-1 and then spiked the second pitch to the mound.
The athletics television broadcast announcer was so stunned by Spike’s pitch that he thought Brentz had somehow thrown the ball from his foot.
Brentz pitched on his 27th birthday, hit Marté two pitches later, and made a perfect inning to quickly overcome embarrassing moments. He also won his fifth win of the season. Brentz beat Kansas City 7-4, Royals scored four points in the second half of the sixth round and two more in the seventh, playing spoiler as Auckland aimed for the AL wildcard spot.
Brentz was, in fact, one of the illustrious spots of the Royals (66-78) this season, pitching to 3.12 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 602/3 innings with 66 appearances. He also has two saves.
