RJ Barrett scored 22 points with Team Canada on Tuesday and was praised by Greek coach Rick Pitino, even backhand.
Return to court For the first time since June 2nd Knicks Eliminated by the Hawks, Barrett was rusty in the first half. But he scored 12 points in the fourth quarter to show Canada’s 97-91 victory over Greece in the Olympic qualifiers in Victoria, British Columbia.
Barrett, who started shooting guard, clinched with two free throws with 34 seconds remaining. Canada still needs to win to reach Tokyo and will face China on Wednesday night before the defeat round this weekend.
Iona’s coach and former Louisville Pitino said of the Knicks 2019 lottery selection from Duke:
“College Barrett couldn’t really take a 12-foot shot. I love the players who work and get better in the game. I’m obviously a big fan of Knicks, so I’m a big fan of RJ. The fact that he has improved significantly is great for me. “
“Give him his left hand and he can’t stop,” Pitino added in third place overall in 2019. “He is strong. He is tough.”
Barrett scored only 3 points in the first half. He finished 14-8 – only 1 of 6 from the shortened FIBA 3 point stripe. He hit five out of seven free throws.
“It was my first time playing together [so] It was definitely sloppy at the gate, but I picked it up and put it all together, “said Barrett from the Toronto area.
Canada hasn’t hosted the Olympics since 2000, but it has eight NBA players, including Andrew Wiggins. Barrett’s father, Rowan, who played for St. John’s, is the GM of the Canadian team.
“My dad wore a 9 the last time he played the Olympics, but now he’s wearing a 9,” Barrett said. “I feel it is right.”
