Richmond’s best bet to win Atlantic 10

The 2019-20 season is becoming historic for Atlantic 10. Dayton joined UMass in 1996 and was ready to reach the final four, perhaps as the second A-10 team to win the national championship.

However, the Flyers never know because the coronavirus has shut down. Dayton now needs to replace Obadiah Toppin’s player of the year. Anthony Grant’s team is headed by Jalen Clutcher, but the Flyers aren’t a pre-season favorite to win the conference. Richmond, with a 24-win season, is an Atlantic 10 pick.

The Spider was set to return all five starters, but lost guard Nick Sherod (12.7 ppg) in the preseason when the ACL broke. Instead, Richmond will be headed by senior guard Jacob Geared. That is the theme of this season’s A-10. I’m a senior guard.

The top five players in the meeting are senior guards. Fats Russell, Rhode Island, finished third in the league in terms of goals and second in the country in terms of steals per game after Gilyard. Rams, however, loses a bunch of talent and probably won’t challenge the title of the conference.

Entering his fifth year in St. Louis, Travisford may have his best team. Like Richmond, Billiken returns all five starters and the top eight scorers. Billiken has a chance to win the conference if he can improve on the free throw line, which finished 350 out of 350 teams last year.

St. Bona Venture returns all starters, but unlike Richmond and St. Louis, it is led by two juniors. Can Bonnie make a noise a year early, like 2021-22’s favorite? Duquene has returned all five starters from the 21-win team and has a great chance to reach the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1977.

play: Richmond has won the A-10 Championship. Richmond’s roster had four 1,000-point scorers, with Spiders among the top 50 nationwide in terms of 2 points, 3 points and free throws. Richmond also led the conference in defense efficiency.

Gilyard reigned as a defensive player in Atlantic 10 this year, leading the nation with 3.19 steals per game. Richmond, a veteran team with a deep bench, has all the elements of a team that could reach the second weekend of the NCAA tournament.
