Restaurant and gym owners worried about an impending shutdown could ruin New York City’s business – CBS New York

New York (CBSNewYork) — Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo said it is almost inevitable that New York City will be designated as the Orange Zone.

They said SMEs would face restrictions again, Hazel Sanchez of CBS2 reported Thursday.

Fernando Salomone, owner of the BeFit NYC Fitness Center on the Upper West Side, has invested everything in building an air filtration system, air quality monitors and a safe haven in the gym.

Membership still plummeted by 80%. He said another shutdown would be catastrophic.

“It’s unfair to me if we have to close. If I get tested, they see, maybe they don’t close mine Jim, “said Salomon.

Cuomo and De Blasio have revealed that the city is heading towards the Orange Zone, closing the gym and closing the indoor dining room.

“New York City will soon be in that orange zone status,” the mayor said. “It’s just a matter of time. It’s very likely that it will be next week or two.”

“Shutting down an indoor dining room is almost like shutting down a dining room altogether,” said Michael Fukay, who co-owns the Queensboro Restaurant in Jackson Heights, Queens.

Fuquay’s restaurant has only been open for two years. An outdoor meal in the summer allowed him to pay the bill and bring back some staff.

The state may not be turning his back, as he is dissatisfied with the city, has few customers eating outdoors, and indoor dining may be closed.

“They are all washing their hands.” Oh, we feel sick of you. Most of you will lose your business, but you have to take it for your team. ” Fuquay said.

The New York City Hospitality Alliance said 140,000 restaurant workers are currently unemployed. Shut down leaves an additional 90,000 without jobs.

Melba Wilson, owner of Melba’s Restaurant in Harlem, said he had already fired more than half of his staff. Wilson said the future for her and all small business owners in the city is bleak unless federal and state governments intervene in the support.

“We have to do this again … it’s a slow death for our industry and this great city,” Wilson said.

If a city is designated as an orange zone, it is unclear whether it will force a total closure of the business or if there is a more local approach.
