Reddit said Tuesday that it would not reduce wages for employees who chose to move out of high-cost cities following a coronavirus pandemic. This means employees will be paid as if they live in a place like San Francisco, where Reddit is headquartered, even if they move to a much cheaper location.

“We are abolishing the US geographic compensation zone to help our employees live where they want and do their best,” the company said in a blog post. “We recognize the various trade-offs people consider when deciding where to live and believe that this is the right balance of flexibility and support for our employees.”

Social media companies also allow employees to choose to work directly, remotely, or in a combination of both. Reddit said the new policy would exclude workers with roles that need to be performed directly.

“We are rethinking the future of office space to support team members who are in the office one to five days a week,” the company said. “Imagine. You’ve lost casual coffee shop-style seating, private space for head-down focus, larger reservable resources and collaboration space for teams to strategically respond to IRL, and fixed desks. There is a neighborhood where teams gather and a desk where you can book. For employees working in the office. “

With pandemics, more and more companies are beginning to see remotework as a more permanent option. Twitter and Square allow employees to work “forever” at home, while Microsoft said it gives employees more flexibility to work from home. However, some companies, such as Facebook and Stripe, say they will adjust their wages based on the new location.
