Putin calls US a major naval threat to Russia in new doctrine

Russian President Vladimir Putin identified the United States as the greatest naval threat to his country in a new military doctrine issued on Sunday.

Putin speaks about his country’s Navy Day in St. Petersburg Said Russia wants to strengthen its maritime influence and become a “maritime power.”

Putin previously signed a 55-page naval doctrine outlining Russia’s design.

The document identifies the United States as Russia’s main naval rival, due to “the United States’ strategic policy of dominating the world’s oceans.”

He also argued that the looming expansion of NATO poses another threat to the high seas.

Putin has said Russia will deploy military force if diplomatic and economic tactics do not prove effective in containing American power.

US officials claim that Putin and Russia are trying to militarize the high seas as they seek to strengthen their military positions.

The doctrine emphasized the importance of the Arctic Ocean and said Russia was seeking to deepen its position in the Black and Azov Seas.
