Police say several police officers were injured, but those who go to the park claim that the presence of heavy police instigated the crowd.
Thousands gathered at Washington Square Park on Sunday when the city celebrated its annual Pride March, but the party was tense around 7 pm
Mobile phone videos show hundreds of police officers in riot control equipment heading to the park.
“The NYPD attacked strange people celebrating their pride,” said witness Ash Tifa.
Some of the clashes between police and park goers were captured in the video.
“A group of NYPD police officers attacked, grabbed, and arrested people who were just standing on the sidewalk,” said Jay W. Walker during the queer liberation march.
At least four people were arrested in the park on Sunday night on charges ranging from chaotic behavior to assault on police officers.
NYPD says people threw bottles at the police.
“They create provocative situations in the hope of producing an aggressive response from protesters,” Walker said.
Sunday skirmishes take place after weeks of struggle around the park.
Residents are complaining about chaotic party participants destroying property and attracting violence at night.
The NYPD was recently enacted and lifted the curfew at 10 pm.
“The presence of the NYPD was completely unnecessary and only helped to escalate and cause violence in a crowd of peaceful, calm and entertaining pride attendees,” said witness Kali Rhodes. ..
Ali Baumann of CBS2 spoke exclusively with the department head Rodney Harrison About the Sunday conflict.
“We asked people to move, but unfortunately they were excited about the couple’s case. There were two assaults on police officers, which was a concern,” he said.
The chief admits that police have used pepper spray on the crowd.
“We are currently investigating and the Manhattan South investigation team will determine what would be needed if punitive action were taken from it,” Harrison said.
Baumann asked the chief how he planned to police the park in the future without increasing these tensions. He says the answer is communication between officers and those who go to the park.
