Precautionary measures help Aspen remain a destination during the pandemic

Aspen, Colorado (AP)-March is Aspen’s money-making season when spring breakers and families head to the mountains for skiing.

The coronavirus pandemic closed all four Aspen / Snowmass ski mountains and almost everything else in the Alpine town, which was funded by tourism.

Then something interesting happened. Aspen became a destination again as people became accustomed to life in masks and began their adventures.

Small towns made people feel safer than crowded big cities. Outdoor activities were Aspen’s business cards, and the mountains were a great place to escape the months of blockade stagnation.

Precautionary measures by local governments and businesses, and the integrity of almost everyone in the town have added a layer of comfort.

“All other mountain towns in Aspen and Colorado really worked really well because people want to get out of the metropolitan area and go to the clean air of the mountains,” said Chef and Chef at Bosq Restaurant in downtown Colorado. The owner, Barclay Dodge, said. “This summer we really did really well. The town was prosperous and, surprisingly, prospered in a safe way.”

Aspen is known as an outdoor mecca, from hiking, cycling and rafting in the warmer months to winter skiing and snowshoeing. As the pandemic progressed and health officials began encouraging people to go out and exercise, the town became a popular place again.

Residents and the town paid particular attention to the coronavirus, as Aspen has only three ICU beds. Local companies took a proactive approach to safety as regulations began to be lifted in Colorado around the end of May.

Aspen enacted an indoor mask obligation in late April and created a mandatory mask zone in most downtown areas in July. Signs have been placed throughout downtown to warn locals and tourists of their obligations and to reduce social distance.

Guards and volunteers kindly reminded people to wear masks, and conflicts were rare. Hikers pull up their masks as they cross trail trails.

Companies have limits on the number of customers allowed at one time, and employees are often at the front door to track them.

Tickets for the Aspen Mountain gondola can be purchased online and scanned with a QR code on the phone. Only members of the same family could ride the gondola together, expanding outdoor dining at the top of the mountain.

The Aspen Ski Company also said it will take a number of new steps this winter to keep skiers socially distant and safe.

“Everything is different except skiing,” said Jeff Hanle, vice president of communications at Aspen Snowmass. “In addition to keeping distance and things, there are some things that may make climbing a mountain more convenient and easier.”

The hotel has revamped the blockade process and introduced changes when it was possible to welcome guests again.

Aspen Meadows Resort is located on a vast site above the Roaring Fork River, where cleaning staff put disinfectants on all surfaces of the room for at least 10 minutes before wiping and cleaning toiletries. Almost everything needs to be scheduled, such as pools, fitness centers, room cleaning, etc., to ensure social distance.

Breakfast is for take-out only and must be booked at the resort’s Platos restaurant. You need a mask and there is a dirty clean pen cup on the front.

“For hospitality lovers, understanding how to run a business was just another key,” said Judd Hawk, general manager of Aspen Meadows. “It was certainly one of the biggest challenges of my career.”

The Colorado restaurant was allowed to serve in 50% capacity in late May.

Dodge has installed a new ventilation system within Bosq, which, like many restaurants in town, has an enclosed outdoor seating area. Bosq checks the temperature of the door and disinfects all common surfaces inside. The restaurant is building a closed area for outdoor dining in preparation for reopening in the winter of December 10.

“Winter brings all the other sets-just around the corner, would that be great?” Dodge said. “do not know”
