Pompeo meets with Taliban leader Afghanistan in Qatar

November 21st – Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Afghan and Taliban negotiators in Qatar on Friday to overcome the impasse in peace talks.

Hours after a rocket strike in Kabul, Afghanistan, diplomats arrived in the country, killing 11 people and injuring more than 20.

Islamic State claims responsibility for the attack.

A State Department spokesman told negotiators that the United States would “sit by its side and help as much as possible” to discuss ways to reduce domestic violence.

After signing the agreement in February, the Afghan government began negotiations in Doha in September, under which the United States agreed to withdraw foreign troops in exchange for a promise to start negotiations from the Taliban.

Earlier this month, the United States promised to withdraw 2,500 troops from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Pompeo also met with Qatar’s leader Emil Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Altani, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Prime Minister, and thanked Qatar for its military partnership at Al Udeid Air Base.

Pompeo and Altani also discussed the need to work together to combat the threat to regional stability.

The visit to Qatar is the latest stop for a 10-day 7-country tour of the Middle East and Europe that began last week.

On Friday, Pompeo wrapped up what was expected to be his last trip to Israel as U.S. Secretary of State by visiting a museum in Jerusalem founded by President Donald Trump’s evangelical supporters. ..
