NYPD officer injured in Queens shooting released from hospital in time for Thanksgiving – CBS New York

New York (CBSNewYork) — Two NYPD police officers injured in a shootout in Queens earlier this week have been released from the hospital in time for Thanksgiving.

Officers Christopher Wells and Joseph Murphy were both still suffering, but thank you for coming home from Jamaica Hospital.

“Sit down and enjoy your meal with the people I love,” Murphy said.

“I was excited to go home,” Wells said.

Only a few days ago, Murphy was shot with both hands and Wells was shot with his feet. Wells’ wife was delighted that her husband was with her on vacation while hugging her three-week-old son.

“I’m very happy,” she said.

“We are very grateful and blessed,” added Well’s mother-in-law. “Thanksgiving is more meaningful than ever. He is very lucky. He is a hero.”

While helping a woman at her Springfield Gardens home after filing a report of domestic violence, claiming she was involved in a violent dispute with her husband, 41-year-old Rondel Goppy, over unfaithfulness. , The policeman was shot on Tuesday.

Police said he began shooting them when Goppy returned home. They turned the fire back and killed Goppy.

His wife was not injured.

“We couldn’t be any more proud of the work they did here in the extreme life-saving situation,” said NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea. “How lucky we are is not lost to us.”

Investigators said Goppy was a police officer at City University of New York and the owner of a licensed gun. They recovered two of his register guns from the scene.

“When we first got the call, we didn’t know if this would be a solemn ceremony or a fun one,” said Patrick Lynch, president of the Police Charity Association.

The message of NYPD and executives on Thursday was to cherish every moment.

“I am very grateful,” Murphy said.

Both police officers require major surgery and have a long way to go before them. However, both are expected to recover completely.
