Some municipal schools may lose up to 100 teachers and staff next week due to COVID-19 vaccine obligations. Union officials said Friday.
United Teachers’ Federation President Michael Mulgrew and School Supervisors and Administrators Council President Mark Canizaro held a joint press conference to warn of staff shortages and the city’s lack of preparation.
The Ministry of Education states that 13% of city educators are unvaccinated and face withdrawals from salaries on Tuesday, but Mulgrew says that number is 5 or 10%.
But even at lower numbers, he warned that thousands of teachers would not be eligible to work after the midnight vaccination deadline on Monday.
“The truth is, at this point, the principal and the director are in constant contact to tell us that they are concerned that not enough staff will come on Tuesday morning,” said Canizaro. I did.
They asked members to vaccinate, but Mulgroo and Cannizzaro are pushing to postpone the deadline until the school’s workforce stabilizes.
Both men emphasized that the absence of teachers was only part of the problem.
The DOE states that 80% of the total workforce of 130,000 people, including essential kitchens and administrative staff, is vaccinated.
It will face more than 28,000 employees being dismissed next week.
In addition, 60 percent of 4,300 School safety officials refused the jab and officials warned that they could quit their jobs soon.
Cannizzaro said that about 10% of city principals have applied for a religious or medical vaccine exemption, and few have been approved.
The union boss contacted managers working on staffing concerns and blew up city officials for failing to assist.
Mulgroo criticized Mayor Bill de Blasio for not addressing the issue during the summer and for setting a vaccine deadline during the ongoing school week.
“I’m asking the city hall to wake up and start making decisions based on the influence of New York City children, not on your own political objectives,” he said.
However, on Friday, De Blasio stuck to claiming DOE’s ability to staff all municipal schools after the deadline.
Hizzoner told WNYC radio host Brian Lehrer that he had an army of vaccinated alternatives ready to close the teacher’s hole.
“We are ready,” he said, saying the DOE had a sharp increase in employment last year due to the need for COVID-19. “Even if you need thousands. There are thousands.”
Cannizzaro said on Friday that existing teachers, especially those dealing with subjects such as advanced physics and mathematics, are easily indispensable.
“We’ve heard a lot about having substitute teachers,” he said. “The question is whether they are qualified submarines in the appropriate subject area required.”
He predicted that the exchange would take place on Tuesday morning with an enthusiastic scramble.
“The fact of the matter is that everyone is looking for a replacement now, so it will be very difficult to get a replacement,” he said.
Mulgroo also asked the city hall to account for students who are chronically absent this year, estimating that number is as high as 150,000.
DOE staff who have not been vaccinated after the deadline can choose to take unpaid leave with health insurance or end DOE with severance pay.
De Blasio has long argued that the vaccine’s mission is to curb the outbreak of coronavirus and school closures.
