Wellington, New Zealand (AP) —New Zealand plans to rebuild its Antarctic base and spend billions more on welfare payments as part of a spending program aimed at recovering the economy from the coronavirus downturn.

The government announced its annual budget on Thursday. This shows that the economy is much better than expected after the first pandemic.

This is largely due to the successful stopping of the virus epidemic and the strong international demand for the country’s milk and other agricultural exports.

According to Treasury figures, the country’s economy is expected to grow 2.9% this year and reach 4.4% by 2023. This was followed by a sharp plunge and rapid recovery last year, resulting in an overall downturn of 1.7%.

The budget plan includes NZ $ 344 million ($ 247 million) to rebuild Scott Base in Antarctica, which has been used by scientists since it was first built in 1957.

“Old buildings and facilities that keep people alive in the coldest, driest, and windiest places on earth have deteriorated,” said Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta. “If you do nothing, the base will eventually be closed.”

The project will require demolishing 12 existing buildings built in the early 1980s and replacing them with three large interconnected buildings. The reconstructed base can accommodate up to 100 people at a time.
