Midtown New York City sexual assault suspect ordered to hold $15,000 bail

A Midtown sexual assaulter accused of forcibly assaulting a sleeping homeless woman has been ordered to be held on $15,000 bail.

Musa Kamaraa 30-year-old who is also homeless, has been charged with sexual conduct in an incident that occurred at 12:15 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities say he ran into a 52-year-old woman sleeping in a chair on West 31st Street near Eighth Avenue, laid next to her, masturbated, and then forced her to perform oral sex.

Kamala, who fled after the woman woke up, was arrested Monday night by officers who recognized him from surveillance photos released to the media and sent to all officers’ smartphones.

He wore the same white sneakers with green detailing and the same purple sweatshirt with a yellow hood on his backpack.

Bail was set at $15,000 cash or $5,000 bail. This is less than her $250,000 cash or $25,000 bail that Byrns asked for, which he claimed Camara “posed a substantial escape risk.”

Kamala, who was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being arrested for a psychiatric evaluation, has 26 arrests so far, police sources said. Byrns said Camara has been convicted of eight misdemeanors and has failed to appear in court five times.

Kamala was arrested in February for groping a woman on 7th Avenue and West 34th Street. He was convicted of forced touching and sentenced to six months in prison before being released in July.

The previous February, he was conditionally released after pleading guilty to petty theft.

Last December, he was sentenced to 90 days in prison for two other forced contact incidents, and was deemed unfit to stand trial after similar arrests in 2019.

He was also convicted of public indecency in October 2018, records show.
