Mayor of Atlanta vows police “top-to-bottom review”

Atlanta (AP)-Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms conducts “top-to-bottom review” of city police station in line with her vow to reform public security after the deadly police shooting of Rayshard Brooks Brought a consulting company to do.

“We are advancing our administration’s commitment to building lasting and healthy relationships between law enforcement agencies and the communities in which they serve,” she said in a press release Wednesday. I did. Bottoms said the division change would be coming soon.

The Washington, DC-based Police Executive Research Forum was founded in 1976 and provided police stations with alternatives to public security.

Jason Segura, chairman of the Atlanta Police Union, said consultants could face resistance to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution from officers, especially those who feel the department is under close scrutiny after Brooks’ death. Said it was expensive.

Brooks was shot twice deadly in June by police officer Garrett Rolf, who was trying to arrest him at a fast-food restaurant for being drunk behind the steering wheel of a car. Brooks wrestled with a policeman, grabbed a stun gun, and then tried to escape.

Rolf was later charged with felony murder. Another police officer, Devin Brosnan, who was on the scene outside Wendy’s restaurant, was charged with aggravated assault and breach of his oath.

Segura and colleagues said both police officers had followed the protocol. Bottoms has vowed to reform the department and emphasize de-escalation training.

“They want to change the law to benefit the offenders,” Segura said. “I think it’s really ridiculous. APD is one of the most progressive sectors in the country. Ultimately, it makes the city much more dangerous.”

The research forum is paid by the Atlanta Progress Committee, a coalition of CEOs and other civil leaders who regularly consult with the mayor.
