Mavericks Seth Curry traded to 76ers to join his father-in-law’s Dock Rivers

What if your father-in-law was your boss?

Now, Seth Curry is about to find out.

The 30-year-old Curry was traded by the Mavericks to 76ers — now coached by his wife’s father, Dock Rivers — with shooting guard Josh Richardson at the 2020 NBA Draft Night Trade on Wednesday night. Transfer the 36th pick (Colorado Tyler Bay) to Dallas.

Family ties aside, Curry meets Philadelphia’s need as a prolific three-point shooter that can complement the stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

Currys is a 44.3% career 3-point shooter and second only to current Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr in NBA history. He is also four ahead of his two-time NBAM VP brother Stephen.

“Having a truly gravity elite shooter really changes the dynamics of Ben and Joel,” Daryl Morey, president of 76ers’ basketball business, told reporters after the deal fell. “People who have seen the Sixers up close and personal for longer than I do, when Joel and Ben actually had it, how good their lineup was and when everyone was healthy. It’s insane how good those teams were.

“That was tonight’s theme. Getting Seth-you can claim him as the best shooter in the NBA-was really exciting.”

The Mavericks are looking for 27-year-old Richardson to give the team, led by aggressive stars Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis, some physicality and a stronger defensive presence.

“Josh is really perfect because Luka is a tall point guard, as Josh can release Luka to guard (small forward) and move him a little defensively.” Said Donnie Nelson, president of Basketball Operations. “Luka is in front of anything on the back coat and in front of anything on the (Porzingis) front coat.”

Richardson, who joined the 76ers in Jimmy Butler’s sign-and-trade deal last season, also averaged 13.7 points per game last season, but it was his defensive strength that caught Mavericks’ attention.

After Dallas drafted Wing’s Josh Green on the 18th pick, Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said, “After last season’s season, our attack was historically great, but we strengthened our defense. I need to do it. ” “Sometimes it’s a job like you do in a training camp, but when you draft or get players, I want you to have that kind of thinking and ability.”

Dallas also hopes that the addition of 22-year-old Bay, the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year last season, will further strengthen the defense.
