Buenos Aires (AP) — An Argentine judge decided on Wednesday that eight medical professionals involved in caring for football star Diego Maradona will face a trial of negligence.
The judge ruled that brain surgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Kosachov were among those on trial for murder. The trial is not scheduled to begin until the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024.
Defendant has been accused of having died because Maradona did not take proper care while recovering from surgery.
Maradona died on November 25, 2020 at the age of 60 due to cardiac respiratory arrest while recovering from surgery for a blood clot in the brain at a house in the suburbs of Buenos Aires.
A few days after his death, Argentine prosecutors began investigating the doctors and nurses involved in his treatment. In 2021, a medical committee appointed to investigate Maradona’s death discovered that Maradona’s medical team acted “inappropriately, inadequately, and recklessly.”
According to a court ruling, soccer players “have a better chance of survival” if they receive the right treatment at the right medical facility.
In April, prosecutors requested Judge Orlando Díaz to investigate them in trial.
Maradona’s autopsy said he died of natural causes, but Argentine law enforcement officials began investigating the case under pressure from Maradona’s family.
