Mahua crash: driver dies after a petrol tank lorry crashes and burns at I-287, NJ

Mahwah, Bergen County (WABC)-A truck driver died on Saturday morning after a petrol tank truck driving in Bergen County crashed and overturned.

It happened just before 7am at I-287 South on Mahua Mile Marker 66.

The violent collision sent a huge pillar of thick black smoke into the sky. It could be seen for miles.

The unnamed driver was declared dead on the scene.

Accident investigators are working to identify the cause of the accident.

Part of I-287 and Route 17 were closed for hours as the crew worked to clean up spilled fuel and clean up destroyed vehicles.

The crash significantly delayed I-287 and traffic backup in the village of Suffern along Lafayette and Orange Street.

Suffern police controlled traffic in the village, and Ramapo police assisted nearby Hillburn to facilitate traffic back to the New York State Thruway.
