Lucas Serrarayan leads Columbus Crew to MLS Cup title

December 13 – Argentine midfielder Lucas Serrarayan beat Columbus Crew 3-0 to the Seattle Sounders in the MLS Cup final in Columbus, Ohio.

Serrarayan scored in the 25th and 82nd minutes of the victory at Mapfre Stadium on Saturday. Derrick Etienne also scored the crew.

“By the second game [this season]I thought I would do great things this year. “

“We had a lot of trust. We had great players. We had great pairs of goalkeepers, defenders and midfielders. We were confident that we could do great things this year.”

With this victory, Columbus won the second championship in franchise history. The Sounders were trying to win the MLS Cup title for the second year in a row.

“It was an incredible journey for the club, the city, and the people of Columbus,” said crew captain Jonathan Mensah.

“We are very grateful for their out-of-field sacrifices. We are grateful for the wonderful fan base behind us. We have done this for them.”

The crew just behind Harrison Afful set the first score. Affle dribbled on the right side before starting the pass towards the far post. After that, Serrarayan went to the volley with his left foot, dodging the Sounders keeper Stephen Fry.

Etienne doubled the lead with the assistance of Serrarayan about five minutes later. Serrarayan collected loose balls in the box during the sequence. He then squared for a shot before he forged an attempt and sent a pass to his left.

After that, Etienne grounded the one-touch shot to the far post net.

The crew took a narrow lead in half-time before Serrarayan scored a second goal. Luis Diaz Espinoza dribbled into the box from the right side during the play. Then he found a wide open Serarayan at the top of the box.

Serrarayan fired a shot in the upper left corner of the net and attacked with one touch before defeating the fly three times.

Fly and crew keeper Eloy Room made two saves each Saturday. The crew won, even though they had only 35% of the ball.

“They worked hard and fought to the end, but they weren’t enough,” said Brian Schmetzer, coach of the Sounders. “In the long run, I think there will be a lot of success following this franchise. We want to continue that.”
