Seoul, South Korea-The daily increase in coronavirus infections in South Korea has exceeded 3,000 for the first time since the pandemic began. This is because South Korea has celebrated its biggest holiday this year.

The 3,273 new cases reported by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency on Saturday exceeded 1,000 cases for 81 consecutive days, about 840 cases higher than the previous day’s 2,434 cases.

More than 2,500 new cases are from the capital Seoul and neighboring metropolitan areas, and authorities have enforced the strictest social distance rules in the country, except for the blockade since July, 6 pm unless attended. Despite banning private social gatherings of three or more people since that time, transmission has accelerated and is fully vaccinated.

Authorities believe the virus spread further across the metropolitan area during the Chuseok vacation. The Korean version of Thanksgiving began on the weekend and lasted until Wednesday. During this period, millions of people typically travel nationwide to meet their relatives. Authorities say the country may see even bigger daily jumps next week as more people are tested.

As of Saturday morning, less than 45% of the population of more than 51 million people had been fully vaccinated.

Juneau, Alaska-Alaska reported more than 1,700 resident COVID-19 cases on Friday. However, state health officials say it includes reports from earlier this month working to clear the backlog accumulated during the recent surge in incidents.
