Montgomery met Dirr in late 2017 after being introduced by a former college teammate and teammate’s girlfriend after his first season with the Yankees. Montgomery and Dahl had a long-distance relationship for four years as he continued to play for the Yankees and she went on to medical school.

Hours after Montgomery was traded to St. Louis on Tuesday, he posted a farewell message in New York. on Instagram.

“I want to say thank you for making my dream come true for the past six seasons as the New York Yankees, New York,” Montgomery wrote Wednesday, along with photos of the couple’s Yankee-centric shoot.

“Mackenzie and I will never forget the people and memories we made along the way. We appreciate.”

Montgomery said he was “quite shocked” when he first heard about the Yankees’ trade for outfielder Harrison Bader.

“I still don’t think I’ve been able to perform as well as I should have here. A much better player than I’ve shown before, but I think I’ve been consistent and definitely worked hard.” Montgomery said Tuesday.

Montgomery has made 51 starts in his last two seasons with the Yankees, posting a 3.77 ERA in 272 innings. He’s been struggling lately, going 0-2 with a 5.36 ERA in his last eight games.

The Yankees start a three-game series against the Cardinals in St. Louis on Friday.
