Joe Biden promises to fight for transgender rights on the day of memory

November 20th – President-elect Joe Biden promised to end violence and discrimination against transgender and non-gender-identified people in a statement acknowledging Transgender Memorial Day on Friday.

“On the day of Transgender Memorial, we respect their lives, and all transgender and gender-incompatible people in the United States live real lives, earn living wages, and dignity in their communities and workplaces. Respect. ”

“As part of our memory, we must strive to end the epidemic of violence and discrimination against transgender and gender-incompatible Americans, and never repeat it.”

This year is the 21st annual TDoR founded by transgender activist Gwendolyn Smith to honor Rita Hester’s death. It honors the memories of those killed in anti-transgender violence.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 37 transgender and non-gender-incompatible people died in violence this year, most of them black or Latino-American. The organization said it was the highest number of years at this point of the year since it began tracking deaths in 2013.

“These victims were killed by acquaintances, partners and strangers, some of whom were arrested and charged, but others have not yet been identified,” HRC said. “Some of these cases have a clear anti-transgender bias. In other cases, the victim’s transgender status forces unemployment, poverty, homelessness, and / or survival sex work. And so on, they may have endangered them in other ways. “

From the inauguration, Biden said he plans to fight for transgender rights. At the City Hall in October, he promised to overturn President Donald Trump’s executive order banning transgender people from working in the military.

“Transgender rights are human rights,” Biden said on Friday.
