Jeb Bush Joins Republican Trump Fellows in Condemning Alvin Bragg’s ‘Political’ Indictment

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has joined a chorus of Republicans speaking out against the New York grand jury indictment of former President Donald Trump, calling the indictment a political move.

Bush, whom Trump called a “low-energy Jeb” when the two candidates faced off in the 2016 Republican presidential primary, remains out of the race when he went to defend the former president on Saturday. It looked like bad blood was put aside.

“[Manhattan District Attorney Alvin] Bragg’s predecessor didn’t bring this up,” Bush wrote on Twitter. “The Department of Justice did not take up the case. Bragg initially said he would not take up the matter.”

“This is a very political question, not a question of justice,” he wrote. “In this case, let the jury be the voters.”

Trump was indicted by a New York grand jury on Thursday on fraud charges related to a 2016 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels, who said he had a consensual sexual relationship with Trump in 2006.

Mr Trump has denied the allegations.

The indictment kicks off a legal process that will likely require Trump to travel to New York to be indicted.

Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, called the indictments “the highest level of political persecution and election interference in history.”

Bush, son of former President George H.W. Bush and brother of 43rd President George W. Bush, isn’t the only former enemy defending Mr. Trump.

Former Vice President Mike Pence said the charges against his former boss were “outrageous” and should be “offensive to all of America, left, right and center.”

Pence, who could run against Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, said in a recent public statement that the former president had played a role in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. was very critical of

But Pence’s reaction to Trump’s indictment suggests there may be limits to the confrontation between Pence and the former president.

In a speech to the National Review on Friday, Pence said, “Overwhelmingly, this is nothing more than a political indictment by the Manhattan attorney’s office who literally campaigned to indict one particular American. I think it’s clear to people in the Institute Idea Summit. “I believe Americans will understand what this is all about.”

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, another front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, denounced shortly after the indictments were announced on Thursday and said he would not cooperate with Bragg’s extradition demands. .

“Weaponizing the legal system to advance the political agenda is upending the rule of law,” said DeSantis. I have written on twitter on thursday. “It’s un-American.”

Trump is scheduled to appear in court in New York on Tuesday.
