Indian-American Karthik Subramaniam Wins National Geographic ‘Film of the Year’

New Delhi Indian-American Karthik Subramaniam is a San Francisco-based software engineer who won the 2023 National Geographic Photo of the Year award, beating out over 5,000 entries.

A Subramaniam photo titled “Eagle Dance” shows three bald eagles fighting over a branch location in Alaska’s Chilkat Bald Eagle Sanctuary, the magazine’s press release said.

He titled the image as a tribute to the fictional Dragon Wars in George RR Martin’s novel A Dance with Dragons.

This photo was selected from nearly 5,000 entries across four categories: Nature, People, Places and Animals.

Subramaniam has been photographing landscapes and his travels for years.

He started experimenting with wildlife photography in 2020 based on the pandemic at his home in San Francisco.

This photo will appear in the May issue of National Geographic magazine.
