It has been a rule for months to wear masks on buses, subways and trains, with or without vaccination. Now, those who don’t can face a $ 50 fine.
Some riders haven’t heard yet, as John Diaz of CBS2 reported Thursday. He asked some strap hangers why they weren’t wearing masks.
A man responded with an aggressive and obscene hand gesture. Others were shy about the camera and crouched one after another.
Another man said he didn’t need it.
“Whatever happens, [isn’t] I’ll help you, “he told Diaz.
He said he wanted to take a chance to get caught.
“Yes, I’m going to put it at risk,” he said.
Back in 2020, MTA Mask compliance was almost 100%.
“This is a public health crisis right now, and I think people should take some responsibility for it at the individual level,” said Susumi C., a resident of the Upper East Side.
“They aren’t thinking about how they can spread it to others. They’re selfish,” said Precious Smith of Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Those Diaz thought fines were a wise idea and told those who were in compliance.
“$ 50 is a lot and I think it conveys the message,” said Roshan Vasion, a resident of the Upper East Side.
Queens commuter Vanessa Quesca said it wasn’t just a promotional stunt, but wanted the city to actually impose a fine. In recent months, the MTA has issued about 40 subpoenas.
“I don’t know how they do it. I don’t think they will,” she said.
“We know this is what our customers want,” said Patrick Warren, MTA’s Chief Safety Officer.
If you forget your mask, transit workers will give you a mask for free at certain stations.
