This death reveals deep rifts in the United States, revealing a crisis in mental health and homeless care. On May 1, a mentally ill homeless man named Jordan Neely started screaming on the New York subway. He was strangled by fellow passenger Daniel Penney, and Neely died in front of the other passengers.

After the death of the popular Michael Jackson impersonator Neely, demonstrators took to the subways and streets, and a crowdfunding campaign was set up to pay for Neely’s funeral. Other Americans also hailed Penny as a hero and donated more than $2.7 million to his defense fund.
