House Speaker Nancy Pelosi resigns as Democratic House Speaker

Nancy Pelosi, the only female speaker in history, is nearing the end of her current term.

Nancy Pelosi, the only woman in the position of Speaker of the US House of Representatives, stepped down as a party leadership official on Thursday.

Following Wednesday’s announcement that Republicans will regain control of the House, Pelosi, the most influential Democrat in Congress in the last generation, is entering the final week of her recent term as Speaker.

She received a standing ovation when she walked into the chamber on Thursday and declared that she would not run for re-election to leadership at the upcoming Democratic caucuses.

With 84% of the vote, Pelosi retained her seat in San Francisco’s 11th Ward, according to the latest tally. Pelosi last year traveled to Kyiv and elsewhere in Europe for summits related to the Ukraine war, attended many Asian countries and his COP27 climate conference currently being held in Egypt, and made a bid for midterm candidates. On October 28, while Pelosi was in Washington, D.C., her husband, Paul, was reportedly attacked at his home in San Francisco by a Canadian who had previously extended his U.S. visa. The incident became an unexpected new element in Pelosi’s decision.

In her first interview since the incident, Pelosi told CNN, “What happened in the past week or two will influence my choices.” Paul Pelosi is already home from the hospital, but his rehab will be difficult.

Pelosi served as Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011 and from 2019. As Speaker of the House in 2010, she played a key role in passing the Affordable Care Act.

She was particularly prominent throughout the administration of Donald Trump, ignoring his many verbal attacks and prompting the House to twice impeach the 45th president.
