High COVID rates in eastern New York could leave local schools closed – Healthy New York

Last week, Mayor De Blasio and Prime Minister Richard Curran closed schools throughout the city as the city reached the 3% threshold set before the school opened this year.

De Blasio is under pressure to reopen school, primarily from Manhattan’s Upper West Side and East Side. Due to pressure, Governor De Blasio and Cuomo have come up with a way to reopen school with a zip code with a low COVID rate. East New York is one of the highest rates of COVID cases.

East New York COVID rate for the last 7 days:

  • 11208 rate is 4.1%
  • 11207 is 3.85%
  • 11239 is 3.49%.

If the city continues to close schools based on zip code COVID rates, these rates will continue to close schools in eastern New York. With the imminent vaccine, many believe that schools should remain closed for the rest of the school year. Please note that “closing the school” only means closing the school building. Teachers continue to teach students remotely. Some teachers say that remote students perform better than those who actually attend school.
