Heavy rains in Ida flood New York City subway and MTA shuts down

New York (WABC)-The MTA has ceased service due to torrential rains flooding the subway on Wednesday night.

“This was a historic and rewarding night for the region, our customers and transportation workers,” said Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO.

Some trains got stuck after it rained up to 6 inches within a few hours. First responders evacuated everyone safely.

“New Yorkers shouldn’t try to travel until they’re notified later. As this epic storm eases, deploy maximum pump capacity at a safe time and put workers into the system so that service can be restored as soon as possible. Push it in, “said Lieber.

Limited bus service was available for essential travel.
