Sgt. Andy Williams told reporters that after the shooting at 1 am, nine people were taken to the hospital and sent people running near 10th Avenue and Hatcher Road. A 14-year-old girl died after being taken to the hospital, two women suffered life-threatening injuries, and six suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
In an interview posted by ABC 15, Williams said the suspect was not immediately identified and arrested while authorities were stitching together witness testimonies.
Williams said pistols seemed to have been used after a controversy broke out among those who gathered for what he called “a party of some sort.”
“Many rounds were shot by this crowd when everyone fled the area,” he said.
Williams said the injured ranged in age from about 17 to 24 years.
The shooting took place about an hour after police reported that a teenage boy was shot dead outside his home about three blocks away. It was not immediately clear if the two shootings were related.
“It looks like we can’t spend the day without the next shooting,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego responded to the shooting on Twitter.
“I’m out of time,” she said. “Change must happen now.”
