The Giants may be in business this season if they believe they must first look like a champion in order to play like a champion.
They wear replicas of the classic blue uniforms they wore in two legacy games held at MetLife Stadium from 1980 to 1999. October 2nd is Bears and December 4th is Commanders.
These throwback uniforms feature a navy blue helmet, a white face mask, scarlet stripes, and the underlined “GIANTS” wordmark that many fans of the era lovingly remember. The red and blue trim of the jersey also includes the exact colors of the era. The uniform worn by Lawrence Taylor, Phil Simms, and the rest of the roster who won the first two Super Bowls in franchise history.
The team brought Taylor back for a video announcing the legacy game and the revival of the uniform style he wore. His 56th was retired by the franchise.
Inside the jersey’s collar is the inscription “Once a giant, always a giant,” citing the words of the late Wellington Mara.
“This era clearly holds a special place in the minds of Giants fans,” co-owner John Mara said on the team’s website. “Our team at the time featured legendary players who are some of the best players in the history of our franchise. And what these uniforms are all over the year It reminds us of what has been achieved. I am excited to wear the uniform again. “
The two legacy games, MetLife Stadium, will be refurbished with the Super Bowl XXI end zone design, so only throwback uniforms will not return to last year. The stadium wall wrap has also been modified to match the atmosphere of the old Giants Stadium in the 1980s and 1990s.
“We’re trying to get you back in time,” said Pete Geri, Chief Commercial Officer of the Giants. “Everything that happens around these games is thematically tied to its history, so when you walk through the building and you see [throwback] End zones, you will remember them. Once inside, you’ll see a graphic on the wall so you can see what we’re doing. All of this can be seen by listening to how to integrate the music being played, the rising video graphics, and the products that are affiliated with the alumni, and the retro pennant giveaways that the game is doing. Things are related to that part of our history. If you’ve been a Giants fan for many years and love the windows and memories of those two Super Bowls, you’ll want to be here. “
