French firefighter arrested on arson charge

A French firefighter has been arrested on suspicion of being a serial fire starter in a twisted bid for an adrenaline fix.

Volunteer first responders from the south of France have been accused of starting a series of wildfires in the Hérault region, not far from the city of Montpellier.

“When asked about his motives, he declared that he had done this to provoke interventions by the fire brigade to save him from his oppressive home environment, and because these interventions excited him.” Belargent said in a statement

“He called it adrenaline, which is his own term. He also said it requires social recognition,” he added.

The man has worked as a forestry engineer for 20 years and is a member of the city council.

He was charged with “destroying forests, moors, scrublands, or plantations belonging to others under conditions likely to expose people to physical harm.”

“He finds it difficult to explain. In a way, being arrested is a relief. He describes it as an addiction.”

Meanwhile, former fire brigade colonel Ludovic Pingano said, “I would hate to have these kinds of individuals in our organization.”

If convicted, the suspect could face up to 15 years in prison and a hefty fine of $153,000.
