The Falcons interviewed longtime defensive coordinator and former Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio Wednesday about an open defensive coordinator position in Atlanta, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. It is

Fangio spent the 2022 season as a defensive consultant for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Fangio’s coaching roots run deep as a coaching veteran with over 40 years of experience. He has had 33 seasons in the NFL. Before taking the Broncos head coaching job in 2019 (which he held until 2021), Fangio served as defensive coordinator for 20 of the last 24 seasons at the NFL or college level.

Fangio is connected to former Falcons defensive coordinator Dean Pease. Before Pease joined the Baltimore staff in 2010, Fangio became head of the team in 2008 when he was hired as a coach. As he spent three years. When Fangio left Baltimore in 2010 and John’s brother Jim Harbaugh joined Stanford University, he took over the job. Fangio served as defensive coordinator for a year at Stanford, but he became the 49ers’ defensive coordinator a year after Jim Harbaugh took the head coaching job.

One of the most memorable stints of Fangio’s career was with the Chicago Bears. (Another connection with the Falcons: Former Bears general manager Ryan Pace is now a senior personnel executive in Atlanta).

Fangio inherited the 30th-ranked defensive unit when he assumed the position of defensive coordinator in 2015. By 2018, Chicago’s defense led the league in forced turnovers and interceptions. The Bears also boasted him third in total defense, second in yards per play allowed, and had the best defensive scoring in the league.

Fangio was named Assistant Coach of the Year by PFWA and AP. He was appointed head coach of the Broncos in January 2019 and stayed there for three seasons.
