Winona, Minnesota — A Minnesota man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend. After police found a body in the countryside.

Madeline Kingsbury, who celebrated her 27th birthday on June 1, died on March 31 after dropping her two young children off at a nursery school in Winona, a town of about 26,000 in southern Minnesota. was last seen in Sheriffs found the human body Wednesday afternoon in bushes along a highway near Mabel, about 72 kilometers south of Winona, police said.

The Southern Minnesota Regional Coroner’s Office is working to identify the body, but a Winona Police Department news release said the body was found “using information generated during the Madeline Kingsbury investigation.”

Late Wednesday, police arrested the 29-year-old father of Kingsbury’s two children. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that prison records show he was in custody on second-degree murder charges. No charges had been filed as of Thursday morning.

Kingsbury’s children, ages 2 and 5, have been in the custody of their parents since she went missing.

Kingsbury’s Hospital said in a statement Thursday that the discovered skeleton was hers.

The statement read:

“We are relieved that Madeleine has been found after months of intensive searches and appreciate the extraordinary efforts of law enforcement, other first responders and volunteers. The right people have been arrested. “We are confident that Madeline will be properly prosecuted and convicted.” We are looking forward to it and will now mourn it as a family and put Madeline to sleep properly and respectfully.”

Police said in a Facebook post that a press conference was scheduled for Thursday.
