A dangerous lake-effect snowstorm has paralyzed parts of the west and north New York The state already had more than a foot of snow on the ground Friday morning in some places, and driving is prohibited in the Buffalo area.
The worst snowfall is expected in Buffalo, with up to 4 feet in some places possible by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service, and a period of near-zero visibility is likely.
Elsewhere, lake-effect snow is likely, caused by frigid air sucking up large amounts of moisture from warm lakes.
Snow reported to the Weather Service early Friday morning was over a foot along the eastern edge of Lake Erie, with a total of 20 inches of snow cover in Hamburg, NY, about 12 miles from Buffalo.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul late Thursday declared a state of emergency for parts of western New York, including communities along the eastern ends of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, two of the Great Lakes.
The Hochol emergency covers 11 counties, and a section of Interstate 90 is closed to commercial trucks.
Erie County Administrator Mark Polonkers issued a driving ban Thursday night shortly after heavy snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning moved into Buffalo and quickly covered the ground and roads.
The heaviest snowfall is expected to continue through Friday evening, with more rain expected from Saturday through Sunday.
Administrators have canceled Friday classes for students across Buffalo and the county.Buffalo, Niagara Falls and DePuy Amtrak train stations were closed Thursday and will remain closed Friday, Buffalo News reported. A number of flights to and from Buffalo Niagara International Airport have been cancelled.
Also before the storm, the National Football League announced Sunday that the Buffalo Bills’ home game against the Cleveland Browns would be moved to Detroit.
The site switch means the Bills will play back-to-back games in Detroit, as the Bills are scheduled to play the Lions next Thursday on Thanksgiving.
