COVID NYC Update: Health Commissioners say this may be the most dangerous time to stay unvaccinated

New York City (WABC)-Due to the rapid spread of delta mutants around the world, it may be the most dangerous time to remain unvaccinated against COVID-19. Dr. Dave Chokshi, director of health, said.

Dr. Jay Balma, senior public health adviser to Chokshi and New York City, urged unvaccinated people to do so at a daily briefing by Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday.

“This strain of virus appears to be more infectious and more dangerous, but it also seems to be very responsive to vaccines,” said Balma.

Delta variants represent about 10% of new cases in the city last month and 23% last week.

Health officials are paying attention to this variant, but Varma said new strains generally make up the majority of new cases as more people are vaccinated and infection rates decline. It was.

“It needs to be carefully monitored, but despite the increasing proportion of delta cases, the total number of COVID patients continues to decline and the fact that the vaccine remains highly effective needs to be constantly emphasized. There is, “Balma said.

According to Balma, delta variants are much more contagious, so the proportion of populations that need vaccination to reach herd immunity, often referred to as herd or community immunity, is higher than previously thought. It is likely to be high.

Chokshi said his main concern was unvaccinated people “due to the threat posed by this variant.”

“For my fellow New Yorkers who were waiting to decide whether to get vaccinated, if you were standing on the fence, my message was very simple, your wait was over, and now Is the best time to get vaccinated, “Chokshi said.

According to Chokshi, the city has made door-to-door canvassing, knocked on thousands of doors, worked with trusted community-based clinicians to encourage vaccinations, and is now focused on young people.

“These last miles of the vaccination campaign are, in some respects, our most important to reach all New Yorkers who can benefit from the protection provided by vaccination,” says Chokshi. I did.
