Coast Guard: One died after boat capsized in Raritan Bay, NJ

Keyport, NJ-Coast Guard officials say a person found unresponsive near a capsized ship off New Jersey died.

According to the Coast Guard, a VHF radio call from a good Samaritan reported that a 21-foot ship had overturned in Raritan Bay and one was underwater around 10 am on Saturday. The caller was able to recover the unresponsive person and initiated CPR, officials said.

Coast Guard boat crews were dispatched from Sandy Hook and New York to address state and New York City assets. A 29-foot Coast Guard boat arrived within 10 minutes from Sandy Hook and carried the victims. There, the Coast Guard crew continued CPR while the boat was heading for Montmas Cove Marina.

According to the Coast Guard, Manchester’s Karl Bachic, 76, was later sentenced to death by an emergency medical service in Monmouth County.

The ship sank in 30 feet of water. Officials said the rescue team searched the area in search of someone else until it was confirmed that the only crew member of the capsized ship was the recovered Bachich.
