Staten Island city council member Joe Borelli joined his parents in filing a second proceeding seeking an emergency injunction to reopen public schools. He announced on saturday..
Friday night’s submission to the Federal Court of Justice in Manhattan followed Mayor De Blasio’s controversial decision to close all municipal schools due to an increase in COVID-19 cases.
“Mayor De Blasio and Prime Minister Karanza have made our children fail many times,” Borelli said in a statement. “Even though it took six months to prepare for this school year, the preparation failed and the children were forced to pay.”
He added: “Distance education has proven to be a failure and we are now taking additional steps to shut down the school altogether. This is completely irresponsible and unacceptable.”
A group of parents from Borelli and Staten Island filed a proceeding last month in the Richmond County Supreme Court demanding a full reopening of the school. The proceedings complained that distance learning was robbing students of proper education.
Plaintiffs are represented by attorneys Mark Fonte, Lou Gerolmino and James Melmigis.
“Governor Cuomo said just two days ago that the infection rate at school was very low and the infection did not come from school,” Mermigis said in a statement.
“Why do we close schools? This is just another example of the random and arbitrary decisions being made at Albany and the City Hall. But now we are hurting our children. , The incompetence of this top is unacceptable. “
Before opening the school, De Blasio told parents and teachers that he had adhered to his promise to close the school as a safety measure if the positive rate reached an average of 3% over a seven-day period.
