CDC updates mask guidance to encourage Americans to consider N95 masks for higher protection against coronavirus

US health officials on Friday recommended many Americans to wear the type of N95 or KN95 mask used by healthcare professionals to delay the spread of the coronavirus.

These types of masks are considered to be good at filtering air. However, previously there was a shortage of supplies, and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said they should prioritize health care workers.

In the latest guidance posted late Friday afternoon, CDC authorities have removed concerns related to supply shortages and more clearly stated that properly fitted N95 and KN95 masks provide the most protection.

However, government officials pointed out that some masks were more unacceptable than others and urged people to choose the right masks to wear consistently.

“Our main message is that any mask is better than no mask,” CDC spokeswoman Kristen Nordland said in a statement.

The CDC has evolved mask guidance throughout the pandemic.

In a previous update, in September, CDC officials said they were more encouraged to use disposable N95 masks and could use them in certain situations if supply was available. Examples include being near many people for long periods of time by train, bus, or plane. Take care of people in poor health. Or prone to severe illness.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden announced that his administration plans to make “high quality masks”, including the N95, available for free. He said the details would come next week. According to the White House, the federal government has more than 750 million N95 masks in stock.

The latest CDC guidance states that there is a special category of “surgical N95” masks specially designed to protect against blood droplets and other operating room hazards. Authorities said they were not sold to the public and should continue to be booked for healthcare professionals.
