Carson Wentz remains part of the Eagles plan: “belief”

Carson Wentz’s career in Philadelphia may not be over.

When the Eagles turned to Jalen Hearts in the second round of 2020 this week, ESPN reported that the team hadn’t given up hope for the Pro Bowl QB.

“This doesn’t change people’s beliefs about Carson,” sources told ESPN.

The 27-year-old Wentz had the worst season ever before standing on the Hearts bench in his defeat to the Packers last week. With 12 starts, the fifth year quarterback was 2,620 yards, 16 touchdowns and the league’s best 15 intercepts, completing 251 out of 437 passes (57.4%).

The outlook for the transition from Wentz presents complex challenges. They drafted Hurts last year, but the team has a lot of financial responsibility for Wentz’s $ 128 million contract extension, which began in 2021 and lasts until 2024. According to Spotrac, it will decrease to $ 31.3 million ($ 24.6 million deadcap) in 2022 and $ 36.3 million ($ 15.3 million deadcap) in 2023.

Their decisions are time-sensitive and can have financial implications as early as March, when the new league year begins. Wentz’s 2022 base salary of $ 22 million is fully guaranteed and the 2021 roster bonus of $ 10 million will be paid on the third day of the league year. Even if the Eagles choose to cut him as a release after June 1st, they will still be obliged to pay the 2021 salary, but they can spread the $ 59.2 million cap hit over two years.

If Philadelphia successfully mediated Wentz’s deal before the new league year, they would only suffer a $ 33.8 million cap hit and couldn’t spread it. Of course, this requires the team to agree to pay a struggling quarterback $ 25.4 million salary and a $ 10 million roster bonus in 2021.

The previous overall second place in the 2016 NFL Draft from North Dakota was the best ever choice from the FCS School. He has a career completion rate of 62.7 and has thrown 16,811 yards, 113 touchdowns and 50 intercepts throughout the start of 68 regular seasons.

At 3-8-1, the Eagles sit third behind the Giants (5-7) and Washington Football Team (5-7) in the NFC East. They hope that 22-year-old Hearts will face Saints (10-2) at home this week to quell the four-game skid.Kick-off is scheduled for 4:25 pm
